Vivian Timmins is an Indigenous social work educator, researcher, and wholistic wellness practitioner with ancestral roots in the O’Mushkegowuk territory on the western shores of James Bay, Ontario. She is a registered member of Constance Lake First Nation and has dedicated her life to helping Indigenous individuals and families find healing and balance.

Vivian’s approach is deeply personal. As a residential school survivor, she understands the intergenerational trauma that so often lies beneath the surface of anger and emotional dysregulation. Her own healing journey which began with reconnecting to her spiritual roots and cultural practices informs every aspect of her work.

With a Master of Social Work in Indigenous Field Study, multiple college accreditations in counselling and social service work, and years of experience as an educator at the Centre for Indigegogy, Vivian brings both professional expertise and lived wisdom to her practice.

Her work is grounded in the Seven Grandfather Teachingslove, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility, and truth—which provide a cultural framework for understanding and managing anger in a way that restores balance and dignity.

Understanding The Roots Of Anger In Indigenous Communities

Anger doesn't exist in a vacuum. For many Indigenous people, anger is intertwined with generations of colonial trauma, cultural disconnection, and systemic oppression. Residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, and ongoing experiences of racism have left deep wounds that can manifest as anger, frustration, and difficulty regulating emotions.

Understanding these roots is essential. Instead of pathologizing anger as a personal failing, we recognize it as a signal a signal that something deeper needs attention and healing. This trauma-informed, decolonized approach sets this anger management support apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is wholistic anger management?

Wholistic anger management addresses the full spectrum of your being mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical. Instead of focusing only on behaviour modification, we explore the roots of anger, honour your cultural identity, and support healing through both traditional Indigenous practices and clinically informed approaches.

Is this only for Indigenous clients?

Vivian specializes in Indigenous wholistic wellness, and her practice is rooted in Indigenous ways of knowing. However, she welcomes anyone who is open to a culturally grounded, trauma-informed approach to healing. If you're non-Indigenous and seeking support, please reach out to discuss whether this approach is the right fit for you.

Do I need to have a formal anger management diagnosis to access this service?

No. You don't need a diagnosis or a referral to begin. Whether you're struggling with occasional frustration or chronic, explosive anger, you deserve support. Some clients come voluntarily, while others are referred through courts, child welfare, or employers. All are welcome.

How long does anger management take?

There's no fixed timeline. Some clients notice meaningful shifts within a few sessions, while deeper transformation, especially when trauma is involved, can take months. We'll work at your pace and regularly check in about your goals and progress.

Is this culturally safe?

Absolutely. Vivian is an Indigenous practitioner with lived experience, and her practice is built on principles of cultural safety, humility, and respect. You'll never be asked to explain or justify your cultural identity. Instead, your culture will be honoured as a source of strength and healing.

Can you help with court-mandated anger management?

Yes. Vivian provides anger management support for individuals who are court-ordered or mandated by other systems. Documentation of participation can be provided as needed. Please note that this approach is healing-centred rather than purely compliance-focused the goal is genuine change, not just ticking boxes.

What if I've tried anger management before and it didn't work?

Many people come to us after previous attempts that felt clinical, shaming, or disconnected from their reality. This wholistic, culturally grounded approach is different. We start with your story, honour your identity, and build from there.
